Through training and onto the crew. We leave tomorrow for our first fire. I am a sawyer, so my best friend for the summer is a 25 pound hunk of tempered steel (with some darn sharp teeth).
I'm excited, and nervous, and bundle of other emotions.
"A friend who is far away is sometimes much nearer than one who is at hand. Is not the mountain far more awe-inspiring and more clearly visible to one passing through the valley than to those who inhabit the mountain?" Kahlil Gibran
My crew will oversee over 320,000,000 acres of potential burn land. That's an area equivalent to the entire South: from Cape Hatteras west to the Mississippi, and south from the Mason-Dixon down to the Gulf. If the season is light up here we'll in all likelihood be sent down south to fight fire in the western states.
